The foot bones consist of the tarsal (ossa tarsi), metatarsal (ossa metatarsi) and toe bones (ossa digitorum pedis). The tarsal bones are arranged in two rows. In the closer row, the talus (thallus) and calcaneus (calcaneus) are located one on the other. On the medial side, there are bones of the second row: the navicular (os naviculare), medial cuneiform (os cuneiforme mediale), intermediate cuneiform (os cuneiforme intermedium), lateral cuneiform (os cuneiforme laterale) and cuboid (os cuboideum) bones. The metatarsal bones are of a similar structure, with a base, shaft and head. The toe bones are made up of three phalanges: the proximal (phalanx proximalis), middle (phalanx media) and distal (phalanx distalis). The big toe has only two phalanges: proximal and distal.
